Southern African Trade and Connectivity Project (Malawi)
The Government of Malawi has confirmed plans to rehabilitate the 45-kilometre-long Liwonde to Matawale (M003) road which is one of the activities under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP). One of the components under this project is to strengthen transport infrastructure to improve market access and the rehabilitation of the road directly feeds into this component.
The rehabilitation of the Liwonde-Matawale road will include a design review incorporating climate vulnerability assessment, validating economic feasibility study of the road, reviewing the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and road safety star rating for schools along the corridor. The Roads Authority extended the scope for the design review service to include the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) program.
Advanced Engineering Solutions Limited in Joint Venture with Ethio-Infra Engineering PLC in association with MK Consulting Engineers will conduct the design review and construction supervision of the works.
The contract agreement was signed on 18th May 2023 and the site was handed over to the consultant on 22nd May 2023 with services expected to commence on 29th May 2023.
The Government of the Republic of Malawi and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique with financial support amounting 380 million US$ from International Development Association (IDA) are implementing the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project. The objective of the project is to support Malawi and Mozambique increase regional trade coordination, reduce trade costs and time, develop regional value chains, and improve access to infrastructure.
