1 Irrigation Scheme

I am looking to establish an irrigation scheme to improve agricultural productivity and ensure sustainable water management for crop production. However, I am in need of financial support to acquire the necessary irrigation equipment, which includes pumps, pipes, sprinklers, and other essential tools. This equipment is crucial to optimize water usage, enhance crop yields, and contribute to food security. Any assistance or partnership in securing the funding for these resources would be greatly appreciated, as it would help make this project a reality.

Namwera Union Smallholder Farmers’ Association Limited, Namwera Trading Centre, TA Jalasi, Ntiya EPA, Mangochi, Private Bag 1, Namwera, Pmajomeka@nasfam.org, +265 -999036026 Improving Smallholder Farmers’ Soybeans yield for income generation through mechanization

Namwera Union Smallholder Farmers Association Ltd (otherwise known as Namwera IPC) is a member owned organization established in 1998 and registered in 2003 with a registration number 6938 under the Trustees Act. The organization is located in Namwera, 40 km away from Mangochi Mangochi Boma. It is made up of four associations namely Katuli, Ntiya, Masuku and Nyambi. Each association has its own governance and operational structures. The four associations are brought together by a common constitution and a Joint Board whose members are selected from the four association boards.Since its inception, the association has made commendable investments in infrastructure development, having established an office and a warehouse to facilitate aggregation. Despite achieving significant milestones, the association still faces challenges related to low yield, and high transportation costs to effectively achieve its intended results.
The Association has been experiencing low production volumes of Soya due to limited mechanization among its members. Presently, all members use traditional hoes, which are less efficient and labor-intensive. This significantly contributes to low harvests as production is confined to small plots of land, averaging roughly 1 acre, despite some members owning larger plots. Limited access to quality seeds and extension services further exacerbates low productivity. To improve Soya production volumes, the Association aims to enhance provision of quality seed, extension services and mechanized production and post-harvest management. The association’s financial needs for the project are 135, 892 USD which will basically be used for the procurement of Farm machinery and technical support.

33 Enhancing Productivity and Market Access for Smallholder Farmers through Sustainable Agro-Processing Support

The proposed project aims to address key challenges faced by smallholder farmers and Sunseed Oil Limited in Malawi, focusing on enhancing productivity and improving market access. Over the past two growing seasons, farmers have faced reduced yields due to adverse weather and soya rust, limiting their ability to invest in quality inputs. Additionally, poor transportation infrastructure has hindered their access to markets, forcing reliance on middle traders who often offer low prices and export raw materials, leaving local processors with inadequate supplies.

To address these challenges, the project will provide 2,000 farmers with certified high-yielding soya seed and inoculants, enabling them to recover from previous losses and improve yields. It will also invest in transportation vehicles to ease logistical challenges, allowing farmers to deliver their produce directly to Sunseed. This intervention is expected to increase the direct sourcing of raw materials by 10,000 metric tons annually, reducing dependency on traders, boosting factory utilization, and increasing volume of exported products such as soya cake.

The project will create more job opportunities, generate foreign exchange through exports, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers. It will also promote sustainable agricultural practices and contribute to the economic empowerment of rural communities.

49 ENHANCING SOYA VALUE CHAIN ENTERPRISE

Balaka smallholder farmers association is actively involved in soya production and marketing in Balaka and Ntcheu district. Currently the association provides seed loan and extension support to its members. Despite registering recommendable progress in operations, the association faces a challenge of limited business growth due to lack of a processing plant to value add to the aggregated soy beans. The enterprise has a strategic plan of penetrating into a new market with quality processed soya pieces and cooking oil to meet the rising demand of affordable nutritious food requirements locally and to scale within the region.
